Marla Ahlgrimm is a retired pharmacist and internationally recognized women’s healthcare expert. She is well known in the medical community as a pioneer in the area of female-specific hormone health.
In the 1970s, Marla Ahlgrimm was convinced that women were not just imagining the irritability, headaches and other symptoms they experienced before menstruation. So, Marla Ahlgrimm did something about it.
Shortly after graduating from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, Ahlgrimm co-founded Madison Pharmacy Associates. There, Marla Ahlgrimm set out to prove that hormonal changes affected women, especially around menstruation. Starting a revolution in women’s hormonal study, Marla Ahlgrimm helped define what we now call “Premenstrual Syndrome” or, more commonly, PMS. Though it is hard to imagine “PMS” not being a household term, at that time women were regarded with little sympathy, and even less understanding. Marla Ahlgrimm believed it was time to bring this problematic issue to light.
After identifying the hormonal link to changes in women’s health and wellness, Marla Ahlgrimm and her business partner began to zero-in on personalized prescription treatments to address the unique ways in which hormones impact individual women. Through the customized compounding of medications, Marla Ahlgrimm and her associates helped patients achieve better results. The pharmacy was on the cutting-edge of developing medications to treat the symptoms of PMS–so new in fact, that Marla Ahlgrimm and her small team struggled with the FDA and had to work tirelessly to gain attention and spread the word to women. Over time, Marla Ahlgrimm and her healthcare team began to receive national recognition for their groundbreaking efforts and, most importantly, women and their doctors began seeking services at astounding rates. This early work ignited Ahlgrimm’s career and aimed an important spotlight on women’s health.
Over the next three decades, Marla Ahlgrimm dedicated her career to improving the lives of women. From that early work on PMS and hormone imbalance, Marla Ahlgrimm has gone on to develop medical protocols used for PMS and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) management throughout the country, develop unique hormone prescription dosage forms for HRT, and develop specific hormone testing systems for women utilizing saliva and serum. Marla Ahlgrimm has been recognized by the YWCA, the Women’s Fund, and the University of Wisconsin, among others, for her tremendous work to move women’s health issues forward.
Marla Ahlgrimm lives in Wisconsin where she is actively involved in the community and has served on many boards, including the United Way. Since her retirement in 2016, Marla Ahlgrimm has continued to encourage other care providers to help women live happy, healthy lives at any stage through natural hormonal therapy. In her personal time, Marla Ahlgrimm enjoys international travel, photography, and hiking.
